Maria Chimpolo is an Associate Professor and coordinator of the Genetics Unit of the Medical School of the Universidade Agostinho Neto in Luanda, Angola. Since 2007, she has lead genetic projects, such as those related to human identification, pre-natal diagnosis, virus identification and quantification and haemoglobinopathies. She supervises graduates and postgraduate projects to conform to the core services of the university.

She was fully graduated in the UK, with a graduate degree and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences and a Master degree in Medical Law and Ethics. She is a member of the European Human Genetic Association and a member of Technical Committee of Certification and Accreditation of Studies of the SADC region. She is also a member of the LusoAfro-Bioethics Project – Strengthening Bioethics Committees in Lusophone African Region, an EDCTP2 programme supported by the European Union since its initial formation.

Apart from the academic activities, for the last two years, she has the post of deputy director at the National Institute of Evaluation, Accreditation of Higher Education Studies, a Department of the Ministry of High Education, Science, Technology and Innovation. She endorses the Institute´s mission, by promoting and monitoring the quality of technical-pedagogical, scientific conditions and services provided by Higher Education Institutions through evaluation and accreditation of institutions and programs, as well as the approval and recognition of degrees and academic degrees obtained in the country or overseas.

As a result of both activities, she is very much involved in policies formulation and implementation and the promotion of education, health and research in Africa and regularly takes part in academic, technical and scientific events, both, at national and international levels.
